I've never heard of any rule about bbs (besides that you can't use .12s) so long as your gun shoots below 400 fps with .20s

Can I use my own BB’s when I come to play?
You can bring your own BBs and use them, provided that they are quality BBs. Here is the current list of banned bbs:

Actually every legit field in New England judges FPS by .20 or .25, some fields allow 400 with .25 (not for long thanks to insurance), but most are 400 with .20 Having played this for some time now contrary to what Evike and ASGI seem to tell people you do not need 60rps @ 500fps with .43s to be competitive...

i know but my socom 16 is my primary for my team. im a designated marksmen so i upgraded my gun to shoot over 400 with .20 and around 350-360 with .25s i have not chronoed and fear its shooting to hot. thats why i wanted to use .28 or .30 bbs for better accuracy and slower fps. last thing i want to do is hurt some more than what the game requires. thanks for the info guys. if i ever get enough money to play ill come down and get chronoed and aybe scrounge for an extra gun.

Using heavier bbs doesn't make it any safer. What's important is the kinetic force transmitted by the bb, which doesn't change when you switch out .20's for something heavier.

Aaron, the problem is you are missing the physics involved. To simplify things for people insurance carriers and fields use "fps" as the limit but everyone actually is talking about Kinetic Energy "KE" which is why people say 400 with .2 or 360 with .25 etc etc.
Calculating the kinetic energy of a projectile is fairly straight forward using the following equation:
KE = 1/2 m * v 2
where m is the mass of the projectile in kilograms, and v is the velocity in meters per second.
fps is only once side of the equation, mass is the other. Think of it this way, a whiffle ball hitting you at 50mph would sting, a bowling ball would probably kill you.
400fps @ .2g = 1.49j of force... which is the standard. using a heavier bb lowers the fps but is not the whole equation. Below is comparative velocities of projectiles all equaling 1.49j

thanks for the help. im saving up for a new stock gear box so i can flip flop from field to cqb. i might either do that or save up for a cqb gun. but thanks for the help guys!!

Well I think only one field around here allows 450 with .20s (and that will be changing soon). Insurance and other common sense issues will soon be bringing everything down to the more sane 400 with .20 limit on fields. In fact a standards effort is in the works to get manufacturers to stop shipping automatics over 350 to the US. Honestly nobody needs full-auto over 400 with .20s and the pain/injury level starts going way up at that point.

Wait wait your saving up for a separate gearbox? why not just put in the old spring when you play cqb...

i dont want to do that. i just put a new 120 spring in it and it takes way to much time and energy to keep switching springs. like i said its my DMR and my primary so for my team i use it as a sniper support weapon when in the field and when at the citadel i would use it as my primary rifle

Ok i understand...if it was me i would just use the spring because i wouldn't want to spend the money but it can be tedious to constantly swap the springs

once the new 120 settles (depending on the manufacturer of the spring) you should be fine at the citadel. with a brand new 120 spring and a stock barrel, you should be right around the field limit, unless you have 100% compression then youd be right around 420 with .2s . If the only thing upgraded on it is the spring i would chrono it and check but i don't think you'll be over, and if you are it wouldn't be by much.

il bring it around once i get a lipo for it and chrono it. it doesnt shoot auto anymore i disabled that because its supposed to be a dedicated sniper weapon. and to mhealey the gearboxes are 45-50 dollars and are way easier to switch out compared switching just the spring
