Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a member of The Citadel to play?
Yes, you do have to be a member, but membership is only $10.00 per year.
You can download a copy of The Citadel Membership form here.
You can download a copy of The Citadel Safety Waiver form here.
How much does it cost to play once I am a member?
Tuesday nights are $20 (If you bring a friend, you both play for $20)
Friday nights are $20 (Women play for free on Friday night!)
Sunday play is $20
NOTE: Special events and training events are priced differently. (Price posted with the event information)
Can I use my own BB’s when I come to play?
You can bring your own BBs and use them, provided that they are quality BBs. Here is the current list of banned bbs:
Banned BB list 2/15/2011:
- Any Crosman Brand BB
- Gameface BBs / Marking Ammo
- Any metal or glass BBs
- Any graphite or ceramic BBs
Can I rent an Airsoft gun?
You can rent an Airsoft gun from The Citadel. Model will vary based on availability and are rented on a first come first served basis. Each rental includeds a full face mask and 500 BBs. Please check with us if you will need to rent a gun to ensure we will have one available for you.
Gun Rentals are $20
NOTE: The field fee and the rental fee are separate!
What is The Citadel FPS limit?
Please see our safety rules here.
Do I have to use Mid-Cap Magazines?
We would prefer that everyone use mid capacity magazines. In some games they are mandatory, but not for open skirmishes. If you do not have any mid-cap magazines, we may allow you one high-cap instead.
We do this to be new player friendly. Mid-Cap magazines are available for most AEGs in a variety of sizes and are fairly inexpensive by the box.
What is an Open Skirmish?
An open skirmish is a type of event at The Citadel that involves quick half-hour games with varying goals divided up into rounds. This type of game is quick and easy for new players and fun for new and veteran players alike.
What is a “Special Event”?
Special Events at The Citadel are structured game events that usually involve a theme or storyline and are usually referred to as an “Operation”. Events of this type are much more involved and will have more complex goals and challenges.
Do I have to wear a “Full Face Mask”?
Please see our safety rules here.
What clothing should I wear when I come to play?
Aside from comfortable boots (or sneakers), make sure to wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. Beyond that, gloves are a wise investment. Mechanic-style gloves work great. For an open skirmish, you do not have to wear any particular camouflage color or pattern. Sticking to green, tan or black is a good idea; otherwise, wear what you are comfortable with.
Note that for Special Events, the clothing rules may be different, but they will be posted with the event information.
What is a “Close Kill” or a “Close Kill Rule”?
Please see our safety rules here.
What does “Call your hits” mean?
You will usually hear “Call your hits” when a player shoots another and the shot player does not seem to notice they have been hit. If somebody is yelling this at you, chances are you have been hit. Call yourself out and go re-spawn or wait for a medic.
Do you allow “Shooting Glasses” or “Shooters” as they are sometimes called?
Please see our safety rules here.
Can I use “Smoke” grenades at The Citadel?
Please see our safety rules here.
Can I use “Noise Makers” and/or other distraction devices at The Citadel?
They are not only allowed, they are highly encouraged. As long as they are gas-operated and do not produce a sound above 120db, they are fine. You may NOT use any noise maker that uses pyrotechnics or “blanks”.
For BB Grenades -what is the rule? If you are behind hard cover, are you still out?
As long as the grenade goes off (bbs come out) the range is 10ft and hard cover blocks them..
For BB Shower style Grenades, (Like M203 style or S-Thunder) what is the rule?
If you are hit by BBs from it, you are out.
Riot Shields
Riot Shields are not equal to Class III+ Ballistic Shields….. and even those cannot take sustained fire from assault rifles before they degrade and become a liability (or break your arm).
Riot Shields give some protection against small caliber pistols but mostly from bottles/rocks/etc. In real life, they are not an effective means of protection against rifle rounds, certainly not sustained automatic fire.
http://en.wikipedia....iki/Riot_shield
http://en.wikipedia....allistic_shield
Riot Shields are not to be used in The Citadel. If they are used, they are considered part of your gear, and according to game rules, gear hits eliminate you from play.
Do you have a driving map?

From Route 290 East get off at Exit 14 and take a right at the end of the ramp onto Grafton St (Rt 122), and the first light (at Walgreens) take a right onto the access road that leads into our rear parking lot. From Route 290 West get off at Exit 14, and either take a right onto Grafton Street and follow the directions above, or continue to Franklin Street (diner on corner) and take a right, then take a right onto Suffolk St after the David Clark building and then a right into our front parking lot.
Where can I park?

Before 5pm a few cars parking to access the pro-shop is fine if you park along the Brick wall or the fence is not a big deal. After 5pm the map above is accurate. Also please at no time park in front of the loading docks, the fire lanes, or any other places marked as a no-parking zone.

Important: Parking!
Please Note: Do NOT park between the buildings as they have been designated a Fire Lane (which we are looking into). You need to park at the rear of the building instead.
Do NOT park in the center of the parking not It blocks access to our additional parking that is available in the rear of the building. (Through the alley where our old entrance used to be.)
Thank you for your co operation

Airsoft Safety Rules
Airsoft can be a fun sport, but like many sports, proper safety equipment is required.
Full Face Protection *REQUIRED UNDER 18*
Players under the age of 18 are required by insurance to wear a hard, full face covering, such as a paintball mask that fully protects the eyes, nose, mouth, and face. Airsoft ANSI Z87.1 rated goggles and a metal mesh, or rigid 'Ironface' lower face protection, are allowed as long as both are worn at all times.
Eye Protection *REQUIRED*
Eye protection is the most important thing you need to play Airsoft, but often players put themselves in danger by wearing insufficient eye protection. Proper eye protection for Airsoft offers a full seal around the eyes. The lenses, at minimum, should be ANSI Z87.1 rated and ideally MIL-DTL-43511D rated. (It requires that goggle lenses can withstand impacts from .22 chisel-point projectiles fired at 560 feet/sec (~167m/sec) without penetrating the lenses.)
Do you really want to be the player who spent weeks researching the best Airsoft gun, but was too shortsighted to put the same care in protecting their eyes? You can buy another gun. You only have one pair of eyes.
NO Shooting or Safety Glasses! You must have full-seal goggles; no exceptions.
Covering Exposed Skin *RECOMMENDED*
Covering exposed skin with sturdy clothing such as BDUs, tactical gear, or even a hoodie and sweats goes a long way in helping protect your skin against both the environment and BB welts. We strongly recommend covering sensitive areas such as the head, neck, knuckles, knees, elbows, and other thin-skinned areas, but you should wear long sleeves and long pants as well.
Gloves *RECOMMENDED*
In outdoor Airsoft games, gloves are a good idea. In indoor Airsoft games, they are something that no player should be without. Nothing ruins your day like being shot in the knuckles or a finger tip from 10 feet away. A pair of mechanics-style gloves will cost about $10.00 at most stores and will protect you hands and fingers fairly well. Of course, better gloves cost more money, but they also offer better protection. Like any kind of sports equipment, as you grow into the sport you invest more in equipment, but don’t let that stop you from protecting your hands.
Lower Face Protection *RECOMMENDED*
So, you have a good set of goggles. Your eyes are protected. What about your teeth and your face in general? Having some form of lower face protection is very important when you are playing at a CQB (Close Quarters Battle) facility. You will be having BBs shot at you from 10 feet away (and sometimes less).
There are many kinds of lower face protection, and each has good points. You can wear a Shemagh, a lower face protector like 'The Ironface,' or one of the better mesh lower face protectors.
No Running *RECOMMENDED*
Running while holding onto a live Airsoft gun can result in you tripping or colliding with another player and causing injuries. The "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" saying has its origins in the military. With that context, the meaning is fairly obvious: moving fast, or rushing it is reckless and will likely get you killed. If you move slowly, carefully, and deliberate, however, you are really moving as fast as you can without needlessly increasing the risk to your life.
Barrel Blockers *REQUIRED*
These must be on, and magazines out when you are off the playing field. No exceptions and every field in New England enforces this. If you don’t have one, we sometimes have them for sale, but so does Walmart, Dicks, and most paintball/airsoft stores. No excuses. You will get a warning, then sent home. Nobody loses an eye in our building.
FPS Limits *REQUIRED*
The FPS limit at The Citadel is 360 FPS using .25 bbs or up to 400 using .20′s. Please note this is a limit and not a goal! a lower FPS is better overall since this is a CQB center.
No Pyrotechnics *REQUIRED*
We do not allow pyrotechnics of any kind in our building (including “cold” pyro). This rule is non-negotiable. Bringing pyrotechnics to a Citadel Event can result in a player being banned from the building.
Blind Firing *REQUIRED*
Blind firing is not allowed. Its a safety issue and a sportsmanship issue. Blind firing is poking your gun out and shooting without being able to see what you are shooting at. It is also firing in such a way that you offer no target to shoot back at. (Like sticking your gun through a hole). You must always be looking down the barrel of your gun when you are shooting. You must also present some kind of target.
Shooting from behind cover with nothing but your gun sticking out is a safety hazard and frankly not fair to other players. What makes for a good move in a movie is not always good for a game where both sides are supposed to have fun and play fair.
Safety Tape Rules *REQUIRED*
Areas of safety concern will be marked with neon/florescent tape, or labeled “OUT OF PLAY”. These areas are not to be entered or played with. If there are electronic or mechanical things you are allowed to play with they will be marked and your referee will explain this, but otherwise the default is ‘do not touch’.
Safe Shooting *REQUIRED*
Nobody is to directly shoot at anything made of glass regardless if it is covered in mesh or plastic. Likewise nobody is to take cover in front of windows as well. No matter what protections we put in place deliberate shots at glass object will eventually break them. If you do this you may be asked to leave the site, possibly for good. Remember this is a safety issue and is non negotiable.
Physical Contact *REQUIRED*
You are not allowed to grab or grapple with a player or their Airsoft Gun. Doing so can result in you being asked to leave and further penalties. If a scenario calls for you to “carry” someone you only need to put your hand on their shoulder and walk with them.
Close Kills / Safety Kills / Bang-Bang Rule *RECOMMENDED*
The Citadel does not have a mandatory “Close Kill” rule because we are a CQB facility. Everything is close. If you sneak up on someone and have them point blank you can offer a "safety kill / close kill / bang bang" if they accept it by saying "im out" or something similar they are out. If not… Shoot them. You do not have to be cruel about it. Shoot them in the vest or the leg. There is no need to needlessly cause a player pain.

Airsoft Gameplay Rules
These are the general rules of Airsoft that apply across all games at The Citadel.
Honor *REQUIRED*
Airsoft is an honor game and that extends past just calling your hits. You will treat other players and staff with respect at all times. Profanity strewn rants are not acceptable. Players will respect all referee and staff decisions, this not a democracy.
Calling Your Hits! *REQUIRED*
There is one simple fact in Airsoft, and that is you will get hit no matter how skilled you are. When you are hit call our “Hit! Hit! Hit!” and stop firing your Airsoft gun. Calling your hits is a fundamental part of the sport of Airsoft and nothing will earn you a bad reputation faster than not calling your hits. You are considered “Hit” any time a BB hits your clothing, body or equipment unless you see it with your own eyes as a ricochet.
Most games will not count hits to an active Airsoft gun, (You are using at the time) but the hit will count if the weapon is “slung” or holstered.
Walls and Cracks *REQUIRED*
You are not allowed to shoot over full height walls (over 7ft) or through cracks or poke holes in things to shoot through. Anything that should be a solid wall, is even if there is a gap or crack. Windows to shoot through will be made obvious by green border tape
Grenades and Noise Makers *REQUIRED*
A Grenade is an airsoft device designed to eject BBs like a Tornado or Pro-Arms grenade. When it goes over everyone withing 10′ is hit and if a BB hits you outside 10′ you are also hit. Noise Makers like Thunder-B’s are just there to distract, they do not count as hits. Also HARD COVER (wood/stone) protects against grenades.
Sportsmanship *REQUIRED*
Yelling swears or insults at another player is unacceptable and you will be benched for a game or asked to go home. Same with any other kinds of crappy play designed to demean or pick on other players. This is a game, and its supposed to be fun for everyone.
STOP PLAY / CEASE FIRE *REQUIRED*
If there is an emergency of any sort, someone faceplants, glass gets broken somehow, a medical emergency, whatever. All players who see this should yell CEASE FIRE or STOP PLAY, and this should be repeated by EVERY player. Everyone should put on their barrel-bags and let go of their weapons. Players should remain in-place and wait for a restart once game-staff gives the all clear.
Lights/equipment & Doors *REQUIRED*
You are not to turn any lights or equipment on nor off, nor play ‘door games’ with doors. Doors also cannot be kicked open this is a safety risk and can destroy the property.
Moving / building cover *REQUIRED*
You are not to move any object in the field that you have not been instructed to by game staff and watched over by a referee. You cannot ‘fortify’ your cover, or move boxes, pallets, or anything like that. The field may not seem deliberately designed but it is. “Perfect” cover and bunkers are very rare and this is to keep game play moving. Also you are not to ask a staff/ref if something can be moved, if some reconfiguration is allowed they will tell you.
Rubber Knife Kills *REQUIRED*
The question of “Knife Kills” comes up from time to time and the answer is this. You may not “stab” or “slash” another player even if it is a “rubber” knife. You can only “assassinate” someone in the back, not the chest, head, legs, or arms. This is to prevent people from rushing at other players trying to get a “knife kill” and causing problems. You can tap the player with the flat edge of the knife, but be prepared to get shot unless the player is alone. Airsoft is not a video game. On occasion other foam/rubber weapons are permitted but follow the same rules.
